What Is A Digivice?
A Digivice is what separates your average, run-of-the-mill human from those that have been directly touched by the recent Digimon phenomenon. It's essentially a one-device interface with all things digital, serving a multitude of purposes that are essential to investigate the oddities happening all over Lumen City. It also symbolizes the all-important bond between a human and their Digimon partner, remaining inert and powerless until that connection is made.
How'd They Get Here?
Much like the Digimon phenomenon itself, sightings of Digivices have become far more common after the Lumen City expo. However, this is maybe the only thing known about them for sure. The stories behind why and how they appear are numerous, and no two quite go the same way. Some say they're a sign of a greater destiny, marking someone as having a specific role to play in investigating the Digimon phenomenon. Others say they're just happenstance, their appearances the result of being in the right place at the right time. Some see them as a blessing. Others see them as a curse. No matter what, your life won't be quite the same after finding yours;
How you find a Digivice, too, seems up to the capricious whims of fate. Some are transformative, a gadget such as a phone or watch turning into a Digivice when the time's right. Others materialize dramatically from a screen, typically from a device that's been connected to the internet like a computer or smartphone. A few appear when a Digimon partnership is formed, such as hatching from a Digitama alongside a newborn Digimon or being held within the clutches of a Digimon seeking its human. The most subtle sort don't even make a dramatic showing, instead appearing in dusty corners and unchecked drawers and making their presences known at just the right moments. This is a key reason why discussion of Digivices has been so difficult. With seemingly no consistency to the stories surrounding them, separating truth from rumor and hearsay is next to impossible.
How Do They Look?
Digivices come in many makes and models, ranging from sleek and subtle pieces of technology to gaudy, flashy, almost toy-like designs. Typically they come a color scheme that represents the user and their Digimon partner in some way. We accept any canon model of Digivice on in the franchise, and if those aren't to your liking we also let people design their own.
Please note that your Digivice's design does not change its capabilities! We want to allow for self-expression in design without having power levels get in the way, so all Digivices share a list of functions.
How Do They Work?
Digivices are fuelled by a force known as Digisoul. This is the culmination of a tamer's willpower, conviction, bonds, and emotions. In essence, it's everything that gives a human a spark. While many of a Digivice's functions are simply electronic in nature, others rely heavily on this Digisoul to function. A tamer who believes in themselves and their partner will be able to push to greater heights of power than a tamer plagued by tension or doubt. It is believed that the pure power offered by Digisoul is how a tamer's Digimon partner can Digivolve so much more quickly than through natural means.
As a manifestation of an individual human's will, how Digisoul looks varies heavily from person to person. It can be as subtle as a gentle glow emanating from a tamer's Digivice or an extravagant light show. Its color, flow, and even shape tend to reflect the person that the Digisoul is drawn forth from. It is always intangible, though there may be a subtle heat or coolness accompanying it it.
What Do They Do?
Below is a list of all currently-known Digivice functions:
- Allowing the wielder to see Digimon, even ones that have yet to fully manifest.
- Scanning digital life forms, objects, and phenomena, giving more information on them. This tells you a Digimon's name, level, type, and attribute.
- Storing digital items that would fit comfortably in your hands, including many of the items available on the site store.
- Allowing for cards to be scanned, modifying and empowering a Digimon in ways their code normally isn't capable of.
- Protecting a Digimon's human with a portion of their power, shielding them from collateral damage and opportunistic, hostile Digimon. This protection scales with your partner's level: Digimon around that level can smack or toss humans around without grievous injury, though more lethal forms of attack and higher level Digimon are still very dangerous.
- Channeling a human's Digisoul into their Digimon, strengthening the Digimon via their bond.
- Detecting various other digital phenomena, such as lingering signals from recent battles or Digimon manifestations.
Many of these functions can be upgraded via the site store, so if there are any you're particularly interested in, be sure to keep an eye out!
