One Hour Earlier...
Laureate stood frozen in his cramped apartment, his face full of surprise as he found the source of the tapping on his window. On the windowsill stood a green, gooey creature tapping on glass of his window with some kind of watch wrapped around it's body. The creature was adorable-- but not like, normal dog or cat adorable, but cartoon adorable. It's body was mint-colored and it had these big expressive Pikachu-like eyes. It definitely wasn't a normal creature like you'd find out in the wild, but Laurie still reached out to open the window.
The gooey creature jumped from the windowsill to Laurie's arms with a big excited grin and childish excitement.
"Yay yay yay YAY! I finally found you!"
Laurie found himself in a dizzying amount of shock. The little green thing jumped out of the watch it was holding and placed it in Laurie's hand.
"This is a Digivice and I'm your Digimon, get it? You're my Tamer! I've been looking for you for 2 whole hours, Laureate!"
Still confused and overloaded by information, the Journalist placed his face promptly in his left palm while his other hand held the device. Finally, Laurie got his first words out to the creature...
"That- that doesn't explain anything. This was supposed to be a normal day, I have an appointment in an hour! I don't have time to deal with a Digimon or whatever you call your-"
Laurie stopped speaking as the gears in his head started turning. The gooey creature looked quizzically toward it's new partner, poking him with his feet a bit before Laurie broke the silence.
"Digimon-- where have I heard that word before? I can't remember I--"
The journalist looked back to the creature, as if trying to read it's face-- he was trying to remember something. He then took a careful look at the device-- or Digivice as it was seemingly called, and placed it on his wrist. For a moment, a powerful glow emitted from it's screen, then faded. Laurie made a quick sweep of the device's functions and menus, before looking back over to the gummy monster.
"What's your name, thing?"
"Well I sure am not a thing! I'm a Gummymon-- and my name's Tally!"
Laureate had an IMMEDIATE emotional relationship that even Tally could sense-- something between surprise, sadness, and a jolt of anger.
"Where did you hear that name?! Did someone tell it to you?! Did you know another Tally?!"
The Gummymon was immediately overwhelmed by the line of questioning.
"No! I came up with the name myself, I promise!"
The emotions immediately cooled off as the Journalist realized just how illogical the line of questioning was. Whatever this little creature was, it probably had nothing to do with what happened to Tally.
"Probably a coincidence," mumbled Laurie under his breath as he picked up his messenger bag and phone. "I gotta go, don't make a mess, I'll be back in an hour."
"Nonono! I'm coming with you!"
Laurie signed.
"No you're not."
"YES I AM!"
"I already said you're not, so you're no--"
The Starboard Cafe was one of Laurie's favorite places to meet possible connections for stories and other clients. It had just about everything-- cheap but delicious coffee and french pastries, fairly nice outdoor seating and a nice but unpretentious appearance. The outdoor seating, where Laurie sat, had a great view of the ocean and the salty smell of the sea.
"So cliché," said Laurie, apropos of nothing.
"What's cliché?" asked Gummymon as he took a big bite out of a chocolate croissant.
"Just the whole 'monster and partner' thing. My brother used to fantasize about this kind of stuff all the time, and here I am at 27, living his dream. If you're a Digital Monster as your name kinda implies, I don't know how you're able to eat stuff."
Tally finished his pastry as he licked away the billion crumbs around his mouth.
"I was asking what clicke or whatever means."
The journalist ignored the Digimon's comment as his eyes finally went from the ocean back to Gummymon.
"My client should be here in a few minutes, his name's Carlos. He's kind of been around the block a few times and he's got some experience and stories that could make my job a lot easier. When he's here, I need you to act like a toy, got it?"
Tally somehow saluted without raising a hand.
"Momentai, Laurie!"
Laureate chuckled, he couldn't help but to be a little charmed by this creature.
"No worries. Cantonese, right?"
The Gummymon shrugged.
"Iunno?"
The gooey creature jumped from the windowsill to Laurie's arms with a big excited grin and childish excitement.
